Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA Review

Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA Watch

Rolex has just announced the addition of an exciting new model to the 2008 lineup, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA. If you’re a fan of big watches, the Rolex DEEPSEA will most likely be your cup of tea.

The Rolex DEEPSEA was developed to withstand extreme depths and its waterproof rating is an impressive 3,900 metres (12,800 feet). While the watch at first glimpse may appear to share the same case as a normal Sea-Dweller or Submariner, the DEEPSEA features a brand new case design with a unique architecture called the Ringlock System.

The ring is positioned inside the middle case between the crystal and the caseback and it withstands exerted water pressure. The middle case is made from 904L steel and the gorgeous sapphire crystal is slightly domed and has a greater thickness than previous Oyster watches. The caseback is made of titanium and the watch features a helium valve which during the decompression phase of a dive, releases gases that enter the watch.

The Triplock winding crown is triple sealed and screwed onto the case.

The Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA features a unidirectional, rotatable bezel with a 60-minute graduated black CERACHROM disc that allows a diver to keep track of dive time. A new capsule containing luminescent material which emits a blue glow is used for the zero marker, and provides increased visibility in dark, underwater conditions. The indexes and hands on the dial are coated with this same material.

The Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA features the calibre 3135 Rolex movement, known for being precise, reliable, and robust. Other features of the movement include:

  • A PARACHROM hairspring with high resistance to shocks and magnetic fields
  • COSC chronometer certification
  • A power reserve of 48 hours

The DEEPSEA bracelet is made from solid 904L steel and can be easily adjusted to wear over a diving suit due to the new GLIDELOCK clasp and fliplock extension links.

[...] Well, opinions vary as to how large it is but Rolex launched a new watch called the Sea-Dweller Deep Sea with a depth rating of 3900 meters. It’s not on a rubber strap, but it could be Some people say it is 42mm others 43.5mm, either way it is bigger than the old Sea Dweller, but not a monster, however it is supposedly 16mm thick. You can find a great post about it on The Men’s Watch Review [...]

That domed crystal is killer! Not a huge fan of the excessive amount of text around the dial however.

#3 John on 05.02.08 at 12:22 pm

Nah, I prefer the regular Sea Dweller. There is simply too much text around the inner ring. Resembles advertisements!

43mm? Trying to compete with Paneri?

#4 JHONNY on 06.21.08 at 9:56 pm

I LIKE THE CERACHROME BEZEL. RETROFIT IT TO A REGULAR SEA DWELLER AND IT WOULD BE SUPERB

#5 Jacob on 07.10.08 at 5:26 pm

The text makes the whole watch look so horrid. What has happened to rolex? Very big mistake.

Regardless of all negative commnets, we already have a waiting list that has 278 people that want the watch!

As an avid rolex collector, I love it.

New SD looks fantastic! The writing makes the watch some what younger, very sharp. Love the look, but still not a fan of the rolex echted on the innerr ring, makes the watch look cheesy.
The domed glass adds such a fresh feel to the watch!! Very excited about getting one!!

Now for some friendly banter;
Rolex does not compete with panerai.
Panerai needs to compete with Rolex.

I had the pleasure today of strapping on a DeepSea and all I can say WOW! as a long time Rolex fan this has to be the ultimate Rolex I’ve own lots of them in my time this is an absolute cracker. I thought my GMT 11C was impressive and big beside my older GMT the DeepSea make the GMT 11C look like an Datejust not all is positive Rolex could have made the bracelet 22mm all the way instead the chose to reduce to 20mm however that will not deter my purchase can’t wait to get my own
cheers B

Another sad, but surely a profitable move by Rolex to please the “pro divers” submerged in at least 3 feet of water at the water bar of a ultra-special tropical resort.

Love to laugh

I had the opportunity to see the actual watch in Paris. I think the oversize makes the watch unique in the rolex range. The only other watch that come close in a Rolex is the new Y Master.

I looking forward to add to my collection!!!

Little t - Panerai is a GREAT Italian watch - you being Italian should know that. Back to the Roli! I love this new DeepSea and can’t wait to land one.

BTW I have 5 Rolexes and 8 Panerais.

I think the text around the dial spoil the taste of Sea Dweller collection. It looks like the luxry convoy truck with many ad sticker on it…..hoo so disappointed

My friend has this one and I have tried it on - I don’t like at all - zero class. Rolex is about class, this has completely lost it. And 3900m HAHA!!! I thought my 1220m was over kill - but I love my Sea-Dweller though!! Sure some zero class Arabs might line up to buy this one though. But sorry guys would be caught wearing one if I got paid for it.

The watch looks great. I like the domed crystal and the new clasp. But all that writing really detracts from the watch aesthetic. Couldn’t rolex put some of the writing on the caseback instead? And the depth rating is a whole discussion into itself. It appears to me that Rolex is sending a message that no one will out do them on making an impervious watch. But realistically, has anyone dive past 1000m, or even 300m? So what is the point of having a depth rating of 3900m other than advertisement? Most people I know who own a Rolex never even take it with them when they go diving.

Cant wait to get mine, Compared to the Swiss Army 12000Ft CX the Deepsea is a wimp. 360grammes!!!
Now I assure you the 12000CX really is a man’s watch.

#16 Deep C on 11.08.08 at 6:55 pm

I just bought the watch. As a commercal diver this is one heck of a tool. I have had the Sea Dweller since 1986 and retired it. You do not notice the writing on the ring and the “rolex” all around the inside ring you can not see at all. A fine new watch to replace the Sea Dweller 4000.

#17 Arthur on 11.09.08 at 1:23 pm

I have bought this Rolex recently, the text in the ring if you see it on the pictures it is very dominating but it is definately not in real and if you wear the watch.

It is a beautifull heavy watch and abslute the biggest Rolex there is…..what a beauty….and buy it, it is very hard to get and the prices will be higher in months…..

#18 Jonathan Shepard on 11.16.08 at 7:33 pm

Well, I am getting one. It’s very large but somehow not absurd or cumbersome. Very handsome, actually. Grows on you. It’s a very large watch that looks great even on someone with small wrists like mine.

#19 HeadOffice on 11.28.08 at 1:16 pm

About time Rolex starting moving away from girlie sized watches…

#20 Rahul on 12.01.08 at 1:18 am

I want this watch! I don’t know much about diving, but don’t people diving at 12000 ft wear those heavy astronaut-type of diving suits - so is this watch worn under the suit?

#21 maliawatchfun on 01.11.09 at 8:52 am

I own an omega seamaster planet ocean and an oris tt3 2nd time gmt rosegold edition.2 totally different watches but both great.right now i am really excited about the deepsea as i went to the rolex dealer in my city and tried it on.its an amazing watch and i find it the best looking rolex.i didn’t like rolex watches a lot as i found them small and bracellets really bad excpet yachmaster 2 which is an amazing and very expensive watch.but the deepsea made me a rolex fun!

#22 maliawatchfun on 01.11.09 at 8:54 am

Oh and i forgot to say i will own this watch the first day i can afford it.really soon i hope.

#23 Antony Talbot on 01.12.09 at 10:23 am

Fabulous superlative watch, un matched and with no equal…only to be worn and owned, by those who have inclinations to M.C.P. and relatively catastrophic testosterone levels.
There is no alternate or second best. Goes down in history along side the greats ie Lamborghini Miura/ Lotus Esprit/Concorde/Raquel Welsch: Eat your hearts out boys or buy one!!!!!

#24 Datuk Syahrul on 03.01.09 at 7:01 am

I cant wait to own this new Sea Dweller Deep Sea. This is going to be my next collection after GMT Master II Ceramic and AP Royal OakOffshore….

#25 Mohammed Ansar on 03.03.09 at 8:54 am

#26 Don on 06.09.09 at 8:27 pm

I like the Deep Sea and am willing to trade a nearly new 2005 large Y-Master + a 2005 GMT 2 Red and Black. Is this a good deal or am I being overly generous? Opinions?
